UPDATED: The National Police Air Service helicopter is currently assisting ground units in an ongoing search following what is understood to be a robbery at a jewellers in Ryde.
At just after 10:30 this morning (Saturday) multiple Police vehicles descended on the town from all directions, with the Bournemouth-based helicopter flying onto the scene just 15 minutes later.
Officers are currently with staff at the recently-opened Island Jewellers shop on the High Street, with other officers searching in and around the town centre.
It remains unclear at this moment in time if any weapons were used in the incident and whether any suspects have been apprehended.
UPDATE @ 11:25 – The helicopter has now moved off from the area, however officers remain in attendance at Ryde High Street.
The shop has been closed.
1 male has been arrested and detained outside the nearby All Saints Church, but it has not yet been confirmed if the arrest is directly connected with the incident. Police have refused to comment.
UPDATE @ 12:07 – Hampshire Constabulary have now confirmed that 1 male has been arrested on suspicion of robbery. Property has been recovered by the arresting officers.
Armed response officers, detectives and Response teams have all been involved in this morning’s incident, with the Police helicopter called in to contain the area.
Island Echo readers have reported that Police and the suspect ‘ran into the church’ prior to arrest.
UPDATE @ 17:01 – It has now been confirmed that a £1,000 9ct gold ring was stolen during the incident. A female shop assistant was threatened, but uninjured.
This is such a shame as the young man who has the shop was getting on so well.
I hope this does not put him off as it is a very nice shop and was showing great promise.
Will keep you informed.
